Privacy

Refrain, the macOS app, reads and writes one markdown file at a location you pick on first launch. No accounts, no telemetry, no analytics, no crash reporters. Your snippets never leave your Mac unless you put the file somewhere that syncs (iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Syncthing).

The one network request it makes is the update check: Refrain uses Sparkle to fetch https://refrainformac.com/appcast.xml. Like any web request, that check includes your IP address, and Sparkle sends the app version and macOS version with it. Nothing about your snippets is included.

The website

This site uses no third-party analytics, ad pixels, or session recording. On your first visit it sets one first-party cookie (_riv) so we can tell new visitors from returning ones, and sends us a single private notification with the page, referrer, IP address, and browser string. Fonts load from Google Fonts.

Purchases

Payments are handled by Stripe (Stripe's privacy policy). We never see your card number. Stripe shares your name, email address, billing country and the order with us, which we use to send your receipt, let you re-download the app with your email address, and handle refunds. When you download the app we record the time, your IP address and the order it belongs to, to stop shared links from being abused. We don't sell or share this information and don't use it for advertising.
